Tumbbad
Introduction
Tumbbad is that Indian that has recently been released and is a super hit at the box as well as a critically acclaimed movie in different corners of the world through its captivating story and stunning visuals. The story of one who goes on a manhunt to avenge a curse buried in ruins born in the dark and dreary theatre of Maharashtra referred to as Tumbbad, which is a historical drama.
Trailer
We get a glimpse of just how the haunting storyline, along with jaw-dropping visuals in Tumbbad, will be in the teaser of the movie. There are black silhouettes on the screen and rather ominous music when we find ourselves on a journey of hunting a curse throughout the quiet family’s history. By the fact the band is playing in the ruined building and the powerful voice-over explaining something terrible is going to come, the sense of the creeper takes form.
Key Details
Telling a story remarkably short but rich in details Tumbbad is a film by Rahi Anil Barve that is more focused on aesthetic vision. The cast of the film is an excellent one, Sohum Shah himself is in the thick of it as he became a co-producer of the picture, and the actors breathe life into their characters well. Still, Jyoti Malshe deserves applause for portraying the old version of Sohum Shah quite well and scary. An outstanding job is done by MJ Rosenberg in creating music that behaves as the final touch on the creepy story.
Story Line
Tumbbad is the narrative of a guy known as Hastar where his family for generations are converted to the roots by the vengeful Goddess. Based in the 1920s, Hastar and his brother move through the shadowy, mythical village of Tumbbad based on the plot of a progenitor who relinquished ideals of riches as well as love. When Hastar discovers an evil deed, his path presents him with a test that must be answered by his rage to face the Goddess’ wrath when he fights to save his family from the rent.
Direction and Script
Rahi Anil Barve’s masterpiece has given a direction, a film far from the typical Bollywood stereotype. It moves effortlessly with the storyline at a natural pace and keeps the audience engaged from the start to the end of the movie. It would not be wrong to consider it quite impressive that the movie was able to engage the viewer’s attention without overdosing on either cinematic or visual appeal. The cast thoroughly wipes off the screen credits and they are Mitesh Shah and Adesh Prasad who effectively maintain the script to keep the film moving.
Music and Tracks
MJ Rosenberg’s eerie background music to the movie adds a lot of value to it. Even though the songs are not very catchy, they are equally entrancing in their way and help create a little eerie atmosphere of Tumbbad. After the film is over the music, especially the background score, continues to stay inside one.
Theme Production
Nitin Zehner has worked wonders for the film Tumbbad in terms of production design. A beautiful cinematographic masterpiece in which the production design fills each shot of the movie picture and helps to create the thematic feeling of the movie. The second, and third elements, cast, and costume design, are as good as the first one, and contribute to the whole idea of the movie nicely also.
Final Thoughts
Tumbbad is easily one of the most visually and textually stunning movies in Indian cinema. But it is the way this myth has been told, and, for me, the way it has been shrouded in mythos, that makes the film memorable and overpowering in its imagery. Talking about its style and methods used in the narrative, Tumbbad is one with its color, and its fun to see till the last scene.
